Paddy went with Galway Hooker to New York and on to Boston in 1986 !
The intrepid sailor Paddy Barry acquired the St Patrick, a Galway Hooker known then as '' Bád Chonraí '' from Jim O'Meara in 1969 and then after a period of pleasure sailing around Galway bay he embarked on his first major exploration to America. He made the journey in two stages . Firstly to the Canaries in 1985 and then onto New York and Boston in 1986. This was the first known transAtlanic crossing by a Galway Hooker. With a taste for the exploration of the unknown Paddy then embarked on a series of major voyages over the coming years up to 2002 when the St Patrick foundered in Glandore Harbour, County Cork.
Over a period of 16 year Paddy visited the Faroe Islands, Spitsbergen via Iceland, Murmansk, logged 5,800 miles in three months in a round voyage of the west coast of Greenland and attended the Brest 1992 sail festival in France. Amazing achievements for Paddy and his lifetime companion ''St Patrick '' |
